Benefits of installing a solar PV system
- Save on Energy bills
- Improve your carbon footprint
How do solar panels work?
Solar panels are made out of photovoltaic cells that convert the sun’s energy into electricity.
Photovoltaic cells are sandwiched between layers of semi-conducting materials usually silicon. Each layer has different electronic properties that energise when hit by photons from sunlight, creating an electric field. This is known as the photoelectric effect, and it’s this that creates the current needed to produce electricity.
Solar panels generate a direct current of electricity. This then passes through an inverter to convert it into an alternating current, which can then be used by the home or business they are attached to.
Do solar panels work on cloudy days?
Even on cloudy days, solar panels will generate electricity. Their output won’t be as high as it is on sunny days, but the rule still applies: if you can see outside, there is enough light for solar panels to do their job. Because the UK gets more than eight hours of daylight each day and has mild temperatures year-round, it’s regarded as an ideal climate for solar power.
Taking shade into account
Shading can have a negative effect on the efficiency of a solar PV system and can potentially reduce your available roof space for installation. This however can be overcome by using an optimised solution to increase the efficiency of the system and helps to minimise the effects of shading
A detailed survey prior to installation will be able to provide you with the information you require should you need to add optimisation to your system
